UNN introduces Ratings For Lecturers
By Ugwu, Chinagorom Joseph
Enugu- The
University of Nigeria, Nsukka has introduced students’ course Evaluation
platform as the basis for lecturers’ Promotions.
Students’ Course Evaluation is a platform
to measure the teaching effectiveness of lecturers to effect quality teaching
and learning in higher institutions.
Nagorom@info gathered that University Students
are required to rate lecturers of different courses offered in the previous
semester to be able to view their results online. Students, it was gathered,
are required to rate each lecturer by either clicking Poor, Below Average, Average,
Very Good or Excellent to twenty questions. Some of the questions are Lecturer’s
punctuality to class, regularity to class, relationship with the class,
delivery of lectures. Others seek to know whether a lecturer has sold
handout/material directly to students, demanded some forms of gratification
from students, informed the students in advance of his/her absence in class,
used ICT (power point etc) among others. These evaluations must be completed
for each course for a student to be able to view his/her results online as all
results are to be viewed online. Identities of Students are kept away from
lecturers to protect students from possible vengeful attacks from poorly rated
lecturers.
It will be recalled that the University
Management had, through a Memorandum dated February 10 2017 from the Office of
the institution’s Vice-chancellor, and Signed by the Deputy-Vice-Chancellor (Academic),
Prof. J.C. Ogbonna and addressed to all Deans of faculties, said the students'
course evaluation would commence from the first semester of the 2016/2017 (last
semester of the current session) academic session. Part of the Memorandum had
read:
“This is to inform all the Academic
Staff that the University Appraisal Committee (UAC), Appointment and Promotion Committee
(A&P) and the University Council have approved that the quality of teaching
should form an important factor in promotion of all academic staff. Academic
Staff whose teaching score falls below 50% (as determined by students’
evaluation) will be denied promotion, no matter how well he/she performs in
other criteria”.
