Nsukka-The Centre for Basic Space Science of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has raised awareness on how to protect the earth from impacts of asteroids – airless rocky worlds revolving around the sun. The centre held a programme, last weekend, to mark the World Asteroid Day.
The centre said the aim of the campaign is to help people learn about asteroids and how to protect the planet from its impacts.

The centre’s Acting Director, Dr Bonaventure Okere, said Nigeria could not afford to be left out in activities commemorating the anniversary across the world, saying the country had made numerous contributions to the global community of space science and technology.
He gave instances of astronomical wonders, which occurred in Sokoto State in 2004, Taraba State in 2012, and Benue State in 2013, saying Nigeria remained a vital spot for cosmological research. He called on government at all levels to invest in space science to protect the country’s geographical boundary.

According to Nations Newspaper, Part of the events held to commemorate the day included live concerts, community events, lectures and street engagement. Okere said the awareness was necessary to improve understanding, detection and mapping of asteroids.

The event was well-attended by researchers, lecturers and students of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
